I/W/B Questions

Internet / WWW / HTTPS / URL

The Internet is a global system that connects many different computer networks so they can communicate with each other. It uses a set of standard communication rules (protocols) that allow computers around the world to share information.

Who created/founded it?
Computer scientists Vinton Cerf and Robert (Bob) Kahn are credited with creating the main communication protocols (TCP/IP) that define how the Internet works.

When and why?
The Internet grew from early work in the late 1960s when researchers wanted to link computers at universities and research institutions to share data. This began with a prototype network called ARPANET funded by the U.S. Defense Department.

Original use:
Originally, it was used for communication between research centers and universities, and then for email and sharing files.

How it’s used today:
Today, the Internet connects billions of people. It supports communication, social media, education, commerce, entertainment, and almost all aspects of modern life.

🌎 What is the World Wide Web (WWW)?

The World Wide Web is a system of linked documents and resources that you access through the Internet. It uses web pages, links, and protocols to let people view and share information.

Who created it & when:
The Web was invented by British scientist Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 while working at CERN.

Original purpose:
It was created to help scientists share information easily across different universities and labs.

Original use:

At first, it was used to view and link documents in a simple, text-based way.

How it’s used today:
Today, the Web is what we use to browse websites, watch videos, shop online, interact on social media, and access nearly all content on the Internet.

📌 Are the Internet and the Web the same?

They are different but connected. The Internet is the network infrastructure, like the highways that connect computers. The Web is a way of accessing and sharing information on the Internet. They work together, but the Web is just one part of what the Internet can do.

🌍 First Website

  • The first website was created by Tim Berners-Lee in 1990 and went public in 1991.

  • Its purpose was to explain what the Web was and how to use it.

  • It is still online at: http://info.cern.ch/

🔗 What is a URL and HTTPS?

  • URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the address of a resource on the Web. It tells your browser where to find a page.

  • HTTPS stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure. It’s the secure version of the protocol used to load web pages. HTTPS encrypts data so that information shared with a website is private and protected.

Together, URLs point to where the resource is, and HTTPS ensures the connection is secure when you fetch it.

Wi-Fi / Bluetooth / Lamarr / VoIP

📶 Hedy Lamarr & Her Connection to Wi-Fi / Bluetooth

Who was she?
Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian-American actress and inventor best known for Hollywood films in the 1930s–40s, but also for her work in wireless communication technology.

Connection to Wi-Fi & Bluetooth:
During World War II, Lamarr and composer George Antheil developed a “frequency hopping spread spectrum” communication system to make radio-controlled torpedoes resistant to interference. While the U.S. Navy did not use it then, the idea laid the foundation for later wireless technologies. The basic concept of spread spectrum is an important part of modern Bluetooth and early Wi-Fi systems.

Is there a song about her?
There is an indie song titled “Hedy Lamarr” by Mickey Avalon that references her life, fame, and intelligence as part of pop-culture lore.

📡 Bluetooth History

Who developed it & when?
Bluetooth technology was developed starting around 1989 by engineers at Ericsson Mobile in Lund, Sweden. Key contributors included Jaap Haartsen and Sven Mattisson; Haartsen is often credited as the primary developer.

Who named it?
Bluetooth was named after King Harald “Bluetooth” Gormsson, a 10th-century Scandinavian king known for uniting tribes, symbolizing the goal of uniting communication protocols. The name was suggested during early standard meetings.

Why the Bluetooth logo looks like it does:
The Bluetooth logo is a bind rune combining two runes (ᚼ and ᛒ) from Harald Bluetooth’s name, representing his initials.

📶 Wi-Fi History

Who developed Wi-Fi & original name:
Wi-Fi’s underlying standard (IEEE 802.11) was first published in 1997 as a wireless LAN protocol. The term “Wi-Fi” was coined commercially in 1999 by the Wi-Fi Alliance’s branding team as a catchy name (inspired by “Hi-Fi”), not a technical term.

When and why named?

The name was chosen to be easier to market than technical names like “IEEE 802.11b” and to evoke high-fidelity association.

Lamarr’s role in Wi-Fi:
Lamarr’s frequency hopping helped inspire later wireless communication ideas, but she did not directly invent Wi-Fi itself. Wi-Fi as a standard resulted from many contributions, including work by others like Victor Hayes and John O’Sullivan.

📞 Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)

What it is:
VoIP is the technology that allows voice communication over the Internet instead of traditional phone lines. It breaks voice into digital packets and sends them over data networks.

Who invented it & when:
The first commercial VoIP application is generally credited to VocalTec Communications in 1995 with Internet Phone software that enabled voice calls over the early Internet.

Would FaceTime, Zoom, and WhatsApp exist without it?
No. Many modern communication tools like FaceTime, Zoom, and WhatsApp Calls rely on VoIP principles (voice/data over IP networks). Without the development of VoIP, these services would not operate as they do today.
